Legal information: Common types of brain injuries

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BRAIN INJURYThis year, the cost of traumatic brain injury in the United States will be more than 50,000 lives and at least $50 billion. In addition to traumatic injuries, in which an external physical force damages the brain, this complex organ is also vulnerable to injury resulting from a lack of oxygen or from exposure to toxic substances. Survivors of a brain injury can experience significant cognitive and behavioral deficits, as well as long-term complications. In cases where a brain injury was caused by the negligence or recklessness of others, legal action may result in compensation for the emotional and financial damages incurred. TYPES OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURYThere are two varieties of traumatic brain injury:1) A closed brain injury, in which the skull is not broken or penetrated. Common examples are car accidents or falls.2) A penetrating (or open) brain injury, in which there is a break in the skull. A common example is a bullet wound.Traumatic brain injuries are further distinguished by where and how they occur in the brain:1) Focal brain injuries occur in one particular area of the brain.2) Diffuse brain injuries result in damage to more than one area of the brain.COMMON FOCAL BRAIN INJURIES1) Coup injuryA coup (from the French word for "blow" or "knock") injury occurs at the site where the skull has impact with another object. These injuries are usually the result of a moving object colliding with a stationary head.2) Contrecoup injuryA contrecoup (from the French word for "repercussion") injury occurs on the side of the brain opposite impact. These injuries are usually the result of a moving head striking an inert object. Both coup and contrecoup injuries are a type of cerebral contusion, or bruise, of the brain. They may occur individually, or together. Their most common causes are car accidents and falls.DIFFUSE AXONAL INJURY (DAI)Diffuse axonal injury is both the most common and most serious type of traumatic brain injury. When the head is rapidly accelerated or decelerated, such as in auto accidents, movement of the brain lags behind movement of the skull, which causes delicate brain structures called axons to stretch, twist and tear. Further damage can result from chemicals that are released due to extensive tearing of nerve tissue. In addition to auto accidents, other common causes of DAI are falls, assaults, and shaken baby syndrome.OTHER TYPES OF BRAIN INJURY1) Hypoxic Brain InjuryOccurs as a result of an insufficient
