Twelve coal miners died when thirteen were trapped for two days after an explosion at Sago Mine in Tallmansville, West Virginia. Twenty-seven miners died in coal mining accidents in the United States in 2008 alone. Other years the death count has been in the hundreds. While mining disasters are front page news, every day mining deaths go unnoticed by all but friends and family. Mining is a noble but dangerous profession. As a miner, what hazards should you be aware of? What rights do you and your family have if you are injured or killed at work? According to accounts given by the US Department of Labour, Mine Safety and Health Administration the most common cause of accidental mining death is being struck, pinned or crushed by vehicles or equipment. Coal miners also died this year when they were buried alive, electrocuted, struck by falling objects, fell from heights, or fell up to 190 feet when the vehicle they were driving rolled, slid or drove off embankments. Coal mine injuries range from death and disfiguring injury to occupational illnesses including pneumonicosis and cancer. Specific types of mining hazards include:* Entrapment, drowning or suffocation: Coal miners are often trapped by materials, structures or equipment. Sometimes mines are rapidly inundated by liquids or gas causing workers to drown or suffocated.*Explosion: Flying debris, concussive forces and fumes caused by exploding vessels under pressure such as air tanks, hydraulic lines or accidental detonation of manufactured explosives. Explosions are also caused by the ignition of gases or dusts within a mine. Coal dust and methane gas are the most common cause of ignitions and explosions in a coal mine.*Struck by falling, rolling, or sliding rock, structural or material: Injuries caused by falling material set in motion by equipment, machinery or ground disturbance; or by the collapse of a building or structure.*Fire: Many substances and materials found in mines can cause fires. An additional hazard of fires is the consumption of oxygen leading to worker asphyxiation.*Electricity*Mate rial handling: Miners sustain large numbers of bodily injury both immediate and cumulative from lifting and moving material within the mine. Injuries range from muscle strains to being struck by falling piles of materials, or objects falling off trucks, racks, etc.*Exposure to dusts and hazardous substances leading to lung, skin, liver, kidney and heart disease including cancer.*Tools and machinery: Ergonomic
